ZUURBERG HIKING AND HORSE TRAILS
The Zuurberg in the Addo Elephant National Park provides the visitor with an unique experience as they walk or ride along the Alexandria forests, through fynbos and valley bushveld.
There are three trails to choose from, a one hour hike, a four hour hike and a five hour horse trail. All three trails start at the Zuurberg office (17 km from the entrance to Addo’s game area). The one hour trail is very popular with day visitors because of its accessibility and easy terrain. Horses are also hired out for one hour periods for novice riders.
The four hour route takes the hiker through three different biomes namely fynbos, Alexandria forests and subtropical thickets. The five hour horse trail also covers all of these plant communities and are undertaken on Basuto pony/Boerperd cross-breeds. All horses are well schooled and are very sure-footed. Guides can be made available to take out horse trails. All necessary riding gear is provided, but inquiries should be made beforehand.
Other hikes in the area include The Spekboom Day Trail (12 km), a novel and refreshing departure from day trails in other national parks. The route, which has been especially designed to offer visitors to Addo a unique outdoor experience, takes hikers through pristine vegetation that has been untouched by elephants in over forty years.
