COMPUTER PROGRAMMING COURSES - Open

SECTION 1:
INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (& INTERNET)
Normal fee: R400 ($100, £60)
This section is designed specifically for people with little or no prior knowledge of computing and will provide a thorough background for students who wish to enter the field of computing.
• History & Development - A short lecture
covering the history and development of DP.
• The Computer - A description of the
basic components of a computer and how they interact.
• The Central Processor - An in-depth
look at the CPU: Memory, Control, Arithmetic Unit and Binary Arithmetic.
• The Peripheral Equipment - The Input
and Output Units.
• Data Capture Equipment - Covering
the different types of data capture equipment and the checks built into
the machines. This section also includes Terminals and Character Recognition.
• Data Communications - Describing the
principles of Distributed Processing and Networking.
• Introduction to Internet.
• Controls in Data Processing - Dealing
with the nessecary controls and checks and controls required to ensure
clean input and reliable output and to provide Audit Trails.
• The Program Logic - Covering the logics
of flowcharting and the development of computer languages.
• Coding the Program - This section
shows how a program is coded and is in fact a low level introduction to
COBOL.
SECTION 2:
ELEMENTARY COBOL COURSE Normal fee: R2 500 ($630, £350)
This section is designed to provide a practical introduction to the
COBOL programme language. It covers such topics as:
• Program Logics and Flowcharting
• COBOL Coding and Structure
• Compiling and Testing Programs
During the course, students are introduced to MSDOS and Word Processing
as part of the process of writing and compiling a number of simple programs
and getting them running. The final examination is a small merge, update
and statistics program which the students must get up and running without
assistance.
ADVANCED COBOL COURSE Normal fee: R2 500 ($630, £350)
This section is designed to simulate a working environment as closely
as possible and is taken up with the writing, compiling and testing of
COBOL programmes.
The final examination consists of a suite of programs forming a Debtors
System which has to be up and running accurately before the BPS certificate
is issued.
A recognised certificate is issued for each of the above courses
and in addition the
BPS diploma is issued to students who have passed all three courses.
REQUIREMENTS: Marticulation (or overseas equivalent) with maths as subject
