NAMAQUALAND Namaqualand, on first impressions, is a harsh, relentless, arid wilderness. Surface water is practically non-existent and subterranean water is brackish and hard to find. Namaqualand hides much of her treasure, which is great mineral wealth , with large copper deposits and rich diamond diggings on a hundred kilometres of its coastline. Gem-stones, gypsum and sillimatite are also mined. And here in this desert, one of
the most remarkable wonders of nature occurs. In the spring, from mid-July

| ... the spring flowers give the
world its most beautiful botanical spectacle. The famous flowers of Namaqualand
are of a wide variety, but principally saisies of many colours, red Gazanias,
purple Cineraria, orange and black spotted Gortevia are a few of the species.
Beyond the granite mountains, the legendary copper mountains of the Nama tribe, the road crosses a great plain. To the west, the Namib Desert lies along the coast, the Skeleton Coast of diamonds and shipwrecks where the cold water washes an hot shore and the mists blanket the land. |

THINGS TO DO & SEE
Angling - The Olifants River, below the dam wall at Clanwilliam, is probably the best water in Southern Africa for smallmouth bass. There is also yellowfish and Largemouth bass are caught in the Clanwilliam Dam.
Boating - The Clanwilliam Dam offers splendid opportunities for boating. The dam is used by yachts and power-boats, while the river has stretches for canoeists.
| Flowers - The
flowers attract thousands of people each spring. In a good year one can
see hundreds of kilometres completely covered in flowers.

Swimming - In the Cedarberg most of the streams have pools, wonderful for swimming on a hot day, and there are large natural pools in the camps at Algeria and Sandddrif. The Olifants River offers swimming throughout its course.

| The Springbok Cafe has a large
curio shop and a large display of gem-stones of the area on view. The accommodation
available is a hotel, B&B's and a caravan park which has a wonderful
children's farm.
