Oudtshoorn is the principal town of the Little Karoo, founded in the late 1850s. It is situated between the majestic Outeniqua and Swartberg mountains of the Southern Cape.
Oudtshoorn achieved its fame as the Ostrich Feather Capital of the world in the late 1800s, when ostrich feathers became the height of fashion in Europe. Even though the industry suffered a major decline after the First World War, due to the changes in fashion, the industry is at present going through a major revival with a renewed demand for feathers, meat and leather. The area also boasts the natural beauty of the Cango Caves.
Oudtshoorn is an ideal base for exploring the many interesting and varied attractions within the immediate area. |
